Newgate Frame
The New Gate and Wickham Manor ❖ Wickham Rock Lane ❖ Winchelsea ❖ East Sussex ❖ England ❖ 20 April 2022 ❖ 9:38am
The majesty of this ancient monument holds a sense of solidity. A gate. A portal into the deeper countryside. The New Gate marks the old boundaries of Winchelsea. Dating back to the 13th Century, it is flanked by the old town ditch, part of the all-important defences.
Just beyond the New Gate lies Wickham Manor. A 16th-century manor house perched on top rolling green hills. The sprawling front field often decorated with sheep, and in spring, lambs. Passing down Wickham Rock Lane from Winchelsea Town, this very scene greets each traveler.
Two iconic structures. Marking the transition from town life to quite country living. A passage from manicured landscapes to the wilds beyond. The distant rhythms of the English Channel tease along the edges of hearing. Birds calling - from rooks to ravens, blue tits to buzzards, even an occasional pheasant - fill the air with sonic textures. Bustling hedgerows full of life. Mighty oaks standing solid in coastal winds.
A genuine piece of countryside magic.
