Snowy Approach to Windmill
Hog Hill Windmill ❖ Icklesham ❖ East Sussex ❖ England ❖ 11 February 2021 ❖ 7:31am ❖ 9 Minutes after Sunrise
Since moving to this area in 2016, I have taken countless photos of Hog Hill Windmill. It lies along the 1066 Country Walk in Icklesham, and perches atop the highest point of the neighbourhood. It is the only surviving post mill in England with both spring sails and fantail where both can be seen.
Built in the late 1700's, this was a working mill until 1920. Purchased by Sir Paul McCartney in 1985, it has been in active use as a recording studio since. Not only does he record his albums at this location, he also rents it to other musical acts. The structure and surrounding grounds are impressively well-kept. At least three times since I've been here, the appearance of scaffolding announced regular restoration and upkeep of this stunning structure.
Standing on the hill's apex facing south, a sprawling view of the English Channel occasionally includes the distant coast of France. Turn around and face north to view Charles Palmer Vineyards towards the right and Icklesham Parish Church leftwards. Far in the distance looking north east, the town of Rye perches upon a hill, it's church steeple a standout landmark even from afar.
I have a vast collection of windmill photos, and it continues to grow as I add to this cache each time I walk past. I've captured views ranging from close up to so distant you can only make out the sails and roof. My favourite windmill photos tend to be from the angle you see here; along the public footpath heading north west towards Icklesham Village.
This shot is one of a handful containing snow. I headed out for a winter wander just before sunrise. The sun had just cleared the horizon behind me, lending that pinkish tinge to the entire landscape. A flock of local crows were making their noisy way across the distant sky; an accidental addition to this countryside scene.
